A flight to Genoa brings you to this atmospheric port city, grand capital of Liguria. Today, Genoa boasts exciting modern architecture (Renzo Piano’s “Bubble”) and easy access to the Cinque Terre – five dramatically sited, clifftop towns – on the beautiful Italian Riviera. Explore the Porto Antico (Old Port), the powerhouse of Genoa’s maritime empire in the 16th and 17th centuries, which underwent serious rejuvenation thanks to Genoa being European City of Culture in 2004. Then take a stroll through the grand Caruggi district where Genoa’s wealthy 16th-century merchants built their neoclassical palazzos along the Via Garibaldi. Away from the crowds, take a train to the village of Caselle (an hour inland from Genoa). Wander Staglieno Cemetery replete with Art Deco tombs and enjoy sea views over glitzy Portofino. Or hike the 12km Via dell’Amore (Lovers Lane) in the Cinque Terre (85km south of Genoa). The Genoese invented pesto, so be sure to sample it here. Genoa also gave the world focaccia – flat bread topped with local Taggia olives. Do try friggitorie (fried fish) and feast on sea bass and squid. |
