Gateway to the west of Cyprus, Paphos (or Pafos) is ideal for winter-sun seekers, families or couples keen to find a tranquil hideaway rich in culture, nature and beaches.
A trading port which flourished in classical times, Paphos boasts the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nea Paphos home to stunning Roman mosaics. Be sure to catch sunset over Aphrodite’s Rocks (where the goddess apparently emerged from the deep) – just 20 minutes’ drive from Paphos.
Away from the crowds, the Akamas Peninsula to the west of Paphos is a beautiful region of gorges, cliffs, beaches and forests, rich in wild orchids and perfect for hiking. A little nearer home, Coral Bay (10km from Paphos) is a long and sandy beach which is great for kids. Golfers should book a round at The Secret Valley or the Tsada Golf Club – both a short drive from Paphos.
Be sure to try the unique local wine of Paphos, Commandaria, made in Kolossi, near Limassol. It’s dark, sweet and delicious – a little like the honey made by the bees from orchid pollen in the Akamas Peninsula. |
