Your flight to Doha brings you to Qatar’s seaside capital, once famous for its pearl divers and proud of its Bedouin traditions of falconry, horse- and camel-racing. Seek out the desert dunes and shop ‘til you drop in Doha’s atmospheric souks.
Explore times gone by at Qatar National Museum to see a Bedouin tent. Visit Doha Fort, in downtown Doha, and buy hand-woven Bedouin textiles. Mix with the locals on Doha’s 7km-long Corniche. This seaside promenade is where families come to picnic and stroll.
Take a day trip to the Sealine Beach Resort (40km south of Doha) or Palm Tree Island (a five-minute boat ride into Doha Bay) for sandy beaches and landscaped gardens. Or get remote at Khor Al Udeid. This huge tidal lake attracts migratory birds and boasts 40m-high sand dunes (80km south of Doha).
The people of Doha love their lamb – look out for ghuzi (whole roast lamb) and biriani (lamb with sweet, spiced rice). Hamour (grouper) and lobster are fresh from the Arabian Gulf while Doha desserts include Esh asaraya (a cheesecake the name of which translates as “bread of the harem”). |
