Your flight to Vigo takes you to Galicia, in north-west Spain, dating back to pre-Roman times. Climb O Castro watchtower for views across Vigo’s historic quarter, and take in the Museum of Contemporary Art. Step back in time at the Quiñones de León (Vigo Municipal Museum) to discover Galician art, archaeology and history. Mix with the locals of Vigo in the bars of bustling Samil Beach or the calle Churruca zone in the city centre. Away from the crowds, cycle through the forests of Monte dos Pozos overlooking the ría (inlet) or visit the big cats and wolves in the A Madroa Hill Zoo (11km from Vigo). Or visit the pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela and the Portuguese city of Porto (both around 100km away from Vigo). Locals in Vigo love their fresh fish and seafood but there are also plenty of red-meat dishes and other local products. Try fish caldeirada (stew), pulpo á feira (octopus, paprika and olive oil) and filloas (pancakes). Sample a bottle or two of the white wines from the Rias Baixas, including O Rosal, Condado and Albariño. |
